Coming off a five-game losing streak where it’s been a struggle to put the puck in the net, the Bishop Brady boys’ hockey team desperately needed a win.

The Green Giants have been shutout in all five games during their recent slide, but knew where to turn to get out the rut. Just as they have all season, senior Max Lamora and freshman Ben Marceau answered the call, and this time it paid off on the scoreboard.

Facing a two-goal deficit against Bow in the second period on Monday, Lamora and Marceau each scored a pair of goals, including Marceau’s game-winning goal midway through the third period, lifting the Division I Green Giants (2-6) to a 6-3 victory over the defending D-II champion Falcons (3-6) at Everett Arena.

“We needed that,” first-year Bishop Brady head coach Ed Seney said. “It was nice to see smiles on their faces. It’s hard when you don’t have much success, but we battled back and put the pucks on net and had some goals.”

Through their first seven games, the Giants only scored seven goals – six of them coming in a 6-5 victory over Nashua North-Souhegan.

Lamora (five goals, two assists entering Monday’s game) and Marceau (two goals) were the only players to find the back of the net prior to Monday’s game, but junior Cooper Nadeau and sophomore Trevor Gallagher tallied their first goals of the season in the win.

And the reason for this increase in production?

“Just effort,” according to Lamora.

The Giants needed plenty of effort to get back into the game as the Falcons outshot Brady, 36-25, in the contest and had 23 shots in the first period, including 15 within the first six minutes of play.

The Giants didn’t help their cause with three penalties in the first period, two of them resulting in Bow goals.

Senior captain Brandon Tibbetts scored a power-play goal 2:50 into the game.

Lamora tied it 1-1 on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line (assisted by Matt Tremblay), but Brady had two penalties in quick succession and fellow senior captain Ryan Tobeler scored on a 5-on-3 advantage with 2:24 left in the first to put Bow up 2-1 at the end of the period.

Jake Mielcarz assisted on both goals for the Falcons.

Bishop Brady goalie Matt Strickland made 21 of his 33 saves in the first period.

“It seems the other team always scores first, so that was normal,” Seney said. “But we have to stay out of the box. You can’t take penalties when you only have 11 skaters ... but Strickland held in there.”

Tobeler scored his second goal of the afternoon 1:04 into the second period to put Bow up 3-1, but unlike past games, the Giants refused to let this game get away from them.

“We picked our effort up,” Lamora said.

Junior Arthur Snow made a nice breakout pass to Marceau, who took the puck beyond the right face-off circle and fired a shot from a tough angle to the far corner of the net 51 seconds later.

Bow netminder Jason Howe (nine saves) initially made a nice toe stop and the puck appeared to bounce off the inside of the crossbar and out of the net, but after some deliberation, the referees ruled the puck had hit the inside of the top of the cage and bounced out, cutting the Falcons’ lead to 3-2 – a moment Seney described as the turning point of the game.

The tone of the game changed a few minutes later when a delay of game penalty was called on Howe with the Falcons already on a penalty kill. Nate Carrier took his spot between the pipes facing a 5-on-3 disadvantage.

Although Carrier (10 saves) made five saves on the penalty kill, it gave the Giants the momentum shift they needed.

“We continue to make the same mistakes again and again,” Bow head coach Tim Walsh said. “We lost ourselves a little bit, we forgot how we got our lead, by moving our feet and drawing penalties and getting those power-play goals. We aren’t good enough right now to recover from those mistakes. But we’re young. We’re learning.”

A few minutes later, Lamora stole the puck from Bow’s defense on his own blue line, skated the length of the ice and beat Carrier with a nice deke, tying the game with less than a minute to go in the period.

“That was a good feeling. We let a lot of games get away from us,” Lamora said. “I felt like right there we said, ‘we’re staying in this game. This is ours to win.’ ”

Bow committed its third penalty of the period with three seconds left, giving Brady 1:57 of a power play to open the third.

The Falcons successfully killed that penalty off, but it let the Giants offense find its rhythm and Marceau netted the game-winner with 7:23 left (assisted by Colin Dexter).

“I was just trying to get some offensive movement in the zone and put it on net,” Marceau said. “Luckily it went in and got the momentum going again.”

Nadeau (unassisted with 4:38 left) and Gallagher (assisted by Michael Kenison with 2:17) added insurance goals shortly thereafter.

“We did the little things right,” Seney said. “Hopefully going into Thursday’s game against Bedford we can go in with some confidence. We can’t control how many numbers we have, but can control our efforts.”
